Biography

My name is Ms. Dana and I have been a leader in scouting for the past 8 years. I currently serve as a Committee Member for Troop 2020, District Commissioner for Atlanta Area Council, and a registered Merit Badge Counselor for Emergency Preparedness and Personal Management.

My journey with scouting thus far has been rewarding and I plan to continue my efforts to bring our youth the opportunities for growth and development.

As you go on this journey with your Scout, remember this merit badge must be earned. So parents, please let your Scout do the work, and only assist when needed. These lessons are essential and valuable life-skills, and it'll definitely come in handy some day. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via email at DToiyusha@gmail.com or send your notice through the registration portal.

Enjoy your day, every day!

-Ms. Dana

Why I am qualified to teach
Emergency Preparedness*
Certified:
Georgia Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency - GEMA
C.E.R.T - Community Emergency Response Team
Prerequisites for this Activity Emergency Preparedness (EP) Clinic Breakdown
The EP badge is a dual or tertiary course. The information contained within this badge calls for active participation from troop members, leaders, community officials, and parents. Because of the amount of information to be reviewed, Scouts will NOT complete this badge during a clinic or summer camp. Before registration, review all worksheets thoroughly to get a complete understanding of expectations.

Please note the following:
  • If your Scout has not taken this course, prepare to remain in this class all day
  • If your Scout has taken part one of this course, he should be prepared to demonstrate the items noted from part one and may schedule for a half-day class
  • If your Scout has completed parts one and two, satisfied requirements for seven through nine and need only to verify with a counselor, you may discuss with me during the break, or call for arrangements
  • If your Scout must complete this badge and there are no available clinics, contact me and we'll make arrangements.

FAQs
Can the EP badge be completed in a day?
Yes. It is possible for the EP badge to be completed in a single 8 to 10-hour day as long as the instructor(s) or Scoutmaster(s) make arrangements with community emergency officials and have a designated area to conduct a drill and prepared to complete the troop MOBEX plan.

My counselor just signed off just after a half-day session. Is this enough?
As a parent and volunteer, it is my duty to teach each Scout according to the information in the worksheets provided by the BSA. If the BSA felt it necessary to aggregate information for us, it must be important to acquire that knowledge. Of course, it is at the parent's discretion how informed the Scout should be in case he is called to serve in case of an actual emergency.

What is MOBEX?
MOBEX is a troop mobilization plan to be enacted in case of an actual emergency. In the case of an emergency and emergency officials have exhausted all forms of assistance, certified civilians or Boy Scouts will be “mobilized” to assist.

How often should we exercise our MOBEX plan?
It is recommended to review and practice the MOBEX plan every six months, making sure to update contact information each quarter. It is better to be prepared than not.

Are Scouts required to bring the emergency kit to the class?
Yes. All Scouts are required to bring both individual and family emergency kits, a representation of water usage to the class, and be prepared to discuss the contents.

Is there a difference between a family and individual emergency kit?
Yes. There is a difference. One is for the Scout and the other is for immediate family members, including your pet. It is a good idea to review the emergency check list for a good representation of what to add in the family kit. Don’t forget to include medicines for everyone.

Why must my parent attend if I am 14 or younger?
EP is a badge that contains an enormous amount of critical information that may be difficult to retain at age 14 or younger. We demonstrate and apply life-saving, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills that require focus and attention. It is recommended that parents participate to help their Scout navigate through the importance of this course and to help him satisfy the requirements and to stay focused. If this course is strongly encouraged and parent(s) cannot attend, it is strongly recommended to wait until your Scout is 15 years or older.

How often do you teach this class?
I participate in EP classes during the fall, spring, and early summer, or as requested by a troop.
